Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the purpose of Luther Academy?
Luther Academy exists to promote faithful, confessional Lutheran theology throughout the world. We accomplish this through theological publications and international pastoral conferences. These conferences are among our most effective tools, equipping indigenous pastors with sound doctrine and encouraging unity in faith and practice within their churches and regions.

2. How do Luther Academy conferences function?
When invited by a church body, Luther Academy collaborates with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s Office of International Mission to organize the conference. A suitable location is selected, and a relevant theological theme is chosen. Our volunteer missionaries—experienced Lutheran pastors and professors—then travel to present the conference in person. These events are made possible entirely through the generous support of our donors.

3. How do these conferences serve the Church?
Many of the pastors we serve work in rural or remote areas where access to ongoing theological training or pastoral fellowship is nearly nonexistent. Often living in poverty, they cannot afford educational resources even if they were available locally. Luther Academy is privileged to stand in the gap—bringing the Word of God, sound Lutheran teaching, and pastoral encouragement directly to these faithful servants.

4. What are the goals of your conferences?
Our immediate goal is to refresh pastors through the Word and strengthen them in their Lutheran confession. Long-term, we aim to support confessional unity and faithful doctrine within the global Church.
Luther Academy has conducted conferences in places such as Panama, Guatemala, the Czech Republic, Norway, Madagascar, Ghana, Spain, India, and the Philippines. In the year ahead, we are scheduled to return to the Philippines and expand our work in Africa, alongside our continued outreach throughout Central and South America.

5. Who teaches at Luther Academy conferences?
Luther Academy conferences are taught by experienced confessional Lutheran pastors and theologians—primarily from the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod and its partner churches. These volunteer instructors are carefully selected for their doctrinal fidelity, pastoral experience, and ability to teach in cross-cultural settings.

6. How is Luther Academy funded?
Luther Academy is entirely donor-supported. We receive no government funding and do not charge the pastors or churches we serve. Your financial gifts directly support the travel, materials, and delivery of theological training for pastors around the world.

7. How can I support Luther Academy?
You can support our mission through one-time or recurring donations, legacy gifts, or sponsoring a specific conference. Donors may also request to support translation efforts or publication of theological materials. All donations are tax-deductible in the United States.

8. How can a church body request a conference?
Church leaders may contact Luther Academy directly through our website to request a conference. Each request is prayerfully considered, and we work in coordination with the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s Office of International Mission to determine feasibility and scheduling.

9. What kinds of topics are covered in your conferences?
Our conferences cover a wide range of theological subjects—always grounded in Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions. Topics include the pastoral ministry, justification by faith, the Sacraments, liturgical theology, Law and Gospel, spiritual warfare, church history, and more—tailored to the needs of the region.

10. Do you publish theological materials?
Yes. Luther Academy publishes books and resources in support of confessional Lutheran theology. Many of these materials are distributed free of charge to pastors in underserved regions and are available for purchase in the U.S. to help fund our mission.

11. Where does Luther Academy currently work?
We conduct conferences and distribute materials in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and parts of Europe. Our global reach continues to grow as more church bodies request faithful Lutheran training and as donor support increases.

12. How can I stay informed about your work?
You can stay connected by signing up to receive occasional email updates. We also encourage you to follow us on social media and check our website regularly for news about recent conferences, upcoming events, and ways to support the mission.

13. How did LOGIA get started?
LOGIA began as a merger of three periodicals, reflecting inter-synodical cooperation among confessional Lutherans. Pastor Joel Brondos originally published a newsletter titled LOGIA, which gave the journal its name. Dr. Robert Preus had a newsletter called Confessional Lutheran Review, produced by Paul McCain and Ken Schurb. Additionally, Professor Erling Teigen of Bethany Lutheran College (ELS) published the Confessional Lutheran Research Society Newsletter with Michael Albrecht (WELS) and John Pless (LCMS).
The founding planning meeting took place on April 20, 1992, at University Lutheran Chapel in Minneapolis. Attendees included Robert Preus, Erling Teigen, John Pless, Paul McCain, and Matthew Harrison. The first issue of LOGIA was published shortly before Reformation Day in 1992.

14.   Who edits and writes for LOGIA?
From the beginning, LOGIA has described itself as a “free conference in print.” This means it is not owned or governed by any one Lutheran synod, but functions as a cooperative endeavor representing conservative, confessional Lutheran theology across synodical lines. The
contributing editors offer a broadly pan-Lutheran perspective rooted in the confessional tradition, with editorial leadership particularly from the heritage of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference — notably the Missouri Synod, Wisconsin Synod, and Norwegian Synod traditions.

Roughly half of the working editors are parish pastors; the rest include seminary and college professors, missionaries, and synodical staff. LOGIA’s authorship and readership span the globe, with subscribers on every continent. While most readers are Lutheran, a notable segment comes from outside the Lutheran tradition, demonstrating its broader theological appeal.
